Chairman’s column July 2014

Governments come in for well-deserved criticism when they do not properly consult the community on development projects that deeply affect local residents.  However, bouquets to ACT  Planning and Land Authority which has initiated a very early consultative process with the Inner South Canberra Community Council in relation to a series of rezoning proposals of much importance to the inner south.  These include proposals to redevelop the Stuart Flats, Gowrie Court and Red Hill Flats.

Community feedback is being sought months in advance of the formal public release of the proposed amendments to the Territory Plan. This is as it should be.  The need to look after public tenants, protect open space and ensure quality development are just some of the issues that we will be watching closely.

We are continuing to monitor the Land Development Agency proposal for a new residential development near the Canberra Brickworks.  About 200 concerned residents attended our recent public meeting and it’s fair to say there is unease about building height, number of residences, the impact on green space, buffer zones and so on. You can view the ISCCC submission on our web site.
